“I encourage my patients to really think about their breast implant choice.  While a majority of my patients (around 90%) choose silicone implants for their breast augmentation, popularity certainly should not be the deciding factor.  After all, you’re the person who will be most impacted by your breast surgery results,” says Dr. Pittman.

Both saline and silicone breast implants can produce aesthetically pleasing breast enhancement results. While saline implants do physically weigh more than silicone per cc, the exact size and shape of the implant used will be predetermined during a plastic surgery consultation with Dr. Pittman. Described by his patients as warm and compassionate, Dr. Ed Pittman has the credentials and the know-how to support his hospitable nature.  Invested in the Athens community, Dr. Pittman grew up in Athens, Georgia and graduated from Athens Academy.  He went on to complete his degree in agriculture at The University of Georgia.  After graduation he returned to Southwest Georgia to manage a large farm and implement what he’d learned. It was during this time that Dr. Pittman rediscovered his childhood passion for science and healing.

We sat down with Dr. Pittman to learn a bit more about his passion and his profession.

What do you think people would be most surprised to learn about you?

I think most people would be surprised that I am as close with my patients as I am.  I know a lot of people have this idea that doctors are cold, but the opportunity to help patients and become an ongoing part of helping them live their lives to the fullest is a big reason behind why I went into medicine.   I want to know that the surgeries I perform have optimal outcomes and help patients.  This is part of the reason my staff and I go to such great lengths to schedule follow-up visits and remain connected with our practice through newsletters and social media.  Whether it’s seeing a patient at a Georgia football game or having them come in for additional treatment, I like to know that patients are doing well.

Do you have a favorite plastic surgery procedure you like to perform?

I think all cosmetic procedures are rewarding because they produce plastic surgery results that can have a major impact on the patient’s life.  I know that the decision to undergo elective surgery is never one to be taken lightly and involves a lot of introspection on the patient’s behalf.  With this understanding, I really like performing breast surgery, specifically breast augmentation, because I’ve seen how much it can improve a patient’s sense of femininity and psychological satisfaction.   I also enjoy the physical and emotional benefits that blepharoplasty (eyelid) surgery can have on both male and female patients in helping their outward appearance match the youthful vigor they still feel.

Innovative plastic surgery procedures are always in the news.  Is there a cosmetic technology that you’re most excited about?

I’ve been in plastic surgery practice in Athens for 20 years, so I’ve certainly seen my fair share of the “latest and greatest” medical technologies.  It’s probably my background in engineering and farming that makes me wonder about the mechanics of things, but I’m not easily swayed by glossy marketing.  That being said, I think injectable treatment with products like Botox® and facial fillers (Juvéderm ®, Radiesse®, Restylane® and Sculptra ®)  are effective and flexible for a variety of patients.   Because these products have been around for a few years and are widely studied, they’re also becoming approved treatments for conditions other than wrinkling and lost facial volume like excessive sweating and migraine relief.
