As we age, our faces are not the only part of our body that can begin to change. Having babies and losing and/or gaining weight can all take their toll on any once-trim waistline. The good news is that with the help of a healthy diet and regular exercise, those in good overall health may also benefit from body contouring procedures to eliminate isolated areas of excess, stubborn fat and loose skin.
Classified by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) as any cosmetic procedure designed to remove fat or eliminate and/or tighten excess skin, body contouring procedures are effective for both men and women. An umbrella term, most plastic surgeons are referring to liposuction and tummy tuck when they use the term body contouring.
For many of our Athens area patients, body contouring is a natural addition to other procedures. For instance, during mommy makeover surgery, patient may elect to have liposuction or a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) in addition to a breast procedure to remedy the effects of pregnancy and childbirth. A tummy tuck is an especially effective body contouring procedure for mommy makeover patients because it allows us to retighten muscles stretched with a baby’s growth as well as address residual skin on top of the abdomen.
For male body contouring patients, liposuction is the most popular procedure. Liposuction simply involves the suctioning of excess fat by a cannula (a narrow tube) in almost any area of the body through tiny incisions. Introduced recently, CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical body contouring method that may also be used to minimize very small areas of excess fat with the added benefit of no downtime. Using a process known as Cryolipolisis, CoolSculpting® applies extreme cold to the treatment area(s) through specialized applicators that damage the treated fat cells beyond viability so that the body naturally dispels them over the course of several months following the treatment.
