Why is Sunscreen So Important to Anti-Aging?

Quick quiz: What’s the number one response that celebrities have when asked about their anti-aging secrets on the red carpet?

If you answered sunscreen, you’re right! Just a few dollops of sunscreen a day are one of the most effective methods for blocking aging UVA/UVB rays. Whether you’re out at the beach or commuting to work, sunscreen can make all the difference in keeping your skin free from hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and other obvious signs of sun damage.

Even if you’re already slathering on sunscreen when you’re outside, it’s important to incorporate it into your daily routine whenever possible. From moisturizers to makeup, make sure you’re enjoying an SPF of at least 30 or higher. Anything less than that will not provide you with the superior protection you need to keep wrinkles and sun damage at bay.

In addition to incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare regimen, you should also take steps to check for skin cancer whenever possible. At Pittman Plastic Surgery, we recommend checking your skin at least once a month for moles and other unusual spots. Keep these best practices in mind when checking out those moles and spots:

  • Look for moles and spots that are asymmetrical on one side.
  • Check out the color of the mole or spot; if it’s been changing colors or appears red, you should schedule an appointment with your dermatologist.
  • New moles and spots should be cause for concern, so be sure to carefully track anything new.
  • If the edges of the mole or spot appear blurred in nature, this could also be a sign that you need to schedule an appointment to get it checked out.
